Sunday, June 26, Slow Food Colorado Springs hosts a world-wide honey tasting at Serranos Coffee in Monument. Serranos will also be showcasing their coffee and every attempt will be made to offer sweet treats to accompany the honey and coffee. The event starts at 4pm, a nice afternoon break before you move on to dinner!
Members are just $7; not-quite-yet-members are $10. Call Jerald Bridgman to make a reservation: 719-633-4304.
Serranos Coffee is located at 625 Hwy 105, just off the highway next to the Vitamin Cottage.
If you missed the Amuse dinner at the Fine Arts Center, it was quite a lovely affair, but there will be plenty of other tasty events in which to involve yourself this summer. Watch for news of a honey and quinoa tasting (June), a field trip to southern Colorado to visit the mule-foot pigs (date TBA), an overnight trip to Boulder to shop at the Farmers Market, visit a farm, at eat at a locally-oriented restaurant (July/August), our annual potluck (September 13) and Local Food Week.
If you are interested in helping us plan and coordinate any of these events, please email Michele at info@slowfoodcoloradosprings.org.
Colorado Farm and Art Market starts on June 15 at the Fine Arts Center and June19 at the Margarita at PineCreek.
It’s time for the annual Colorado Farm and Art Market (CFAM) Season Kickoff & Fundraiser Party on May 15th from 2-5pm at the Margarita at Pine Creek Restaurant. Chef Eric will serve up local food donated by the farmers and artist donations will be showcased in a silent auction format. It’s always a really fun time with entertainment by local musicians and children’s projects. Guests receive a free mini flat of plant starts. Additional information and tickets are available at www.farmandartmarket.com, so come help us celebrate the return of fresh veggies!
It’s the Fine Arts Center’s 75th birthday this year and they are going all out. There are gala events, film screenings and a very special event in May just for Slow Foodies.
The Executive Chef of Amuze is putting together a 5-appetizer menu, plus an amuse bouche, paired with wines, including tax and tip for just $70 per person. When yo8u think about it, to get that at a restaurant, you would spend $10 for a high-class app – that’s $50 right there. Add in the wines, tax and tip and that takes you to well over the $70 mark. So it’s worth it, if you can spend that kind of money in the first place.
From what I’ve heard, it’s also worth it in terms of quality. The food gets consistently high marks from everyone who eats there. I’m looking forward to my first meal there and I hope I walk away satisfied. I don’t ever tend to eat five appetizers myself, so I don’t think it will be a problem. I do hope there’s a little smidge of bread, since I’m a breadaholic. There is a vegetarian option, so if you call to make a reservation, let Val know that.
The event happens on May 16 and you must register by May 10. There will be a cash bar available at 6:30pm and the dinner starts at 7pm.
It’s $70 for Slow Food members and $75 if you haven’t yet joined. Please RSVP for this event by sending your check made out to Slow Food Colorado Springs, c/o Val Bardis, 5076 Artistic Circle, Colorado Springs, Co. 80917. Include the names of the people in your party and how many are members or not. Hope to dine with you soon!
If ever you thought that eating in silence was something you could not do, you should have been at the One Bowl Dinner. Our group is notoriously loquacious and those who dared to come were amazingly silent, except at the beginning and end when, as usual, we talked about those things we love – food and fun!
One Bowl Dinners were designed to help people take a moment out from their routine. We chatter during a meal, eat in our cars, eat in front of the computer or the television, and often do not take time out to truly focus on the food we are eating, where it came from, who produced it, and how it affects our bodies. It’s sort of like an internal massage because, by focusing, you digest in a different way. You slow down and eat mindfully.
Thank you to Adams Mountain Cafe for participating and making a portion of the proceeds a donation to Slow Food Colorado Springs. Thank you to Jessica Patterson for designing and orchestrating the evening. And thank you to all the vendors who put together thoughtful materials for participants to purchase to support healthy, fun food, fair trade, and the planet.
If you missed it, our annual members meeting was a rousing success. Of course, the steering committee always cooks and bakes for this, so it requires little from the rest of the members, just a willingness to eat really good food and share ideas for the upcoming year.
If you want to join Slow Food, it’s easy. Go to www.slowfoodusa.org and click on the “Join Us” tab. We have a wonderful convivium here in the Springs with loads of good energy, fun events, happy food and super people.
30 folks enjoyed the six desserts from Deborah Madison’s “Seasonal Fruit Desserts” and had a chance to chat with her at Pizzeria Rustica Saturday, Oct. 9th. This was our 5th event of the year.
